Atelier SERA

Le thème choisi pour l’atelier de la Société d’Études du Romantisme Anglais (SERA) qui se tiendra à Reims les 1-3 juin 2017 prochains sera celui du congrès « (Re)construction(s) ». Vous trouverez les textes de cadrage en français et en anglais sur le site du congrès à l’adresse suivante:

Cette année, l’atelier SERA consacrera une partie de ses sessions (sous la forme d’une table ronde) aux arts visuels et à l’esthétique romantiques en collaboration avec l’atelier Histoire des Arts, Grande-Bretagne et Etats-Unis (ARTS). Nous accueillerons donc toutes les contributions sur ces thématiques sous la forme d’une proposition labellisée « SERA/ARTS » (British visual arts in the Romantic era ; interrelations between writers, writings and artistic ventures between 1760 and 1837)

Les propositions de 250-300 mots environ devront être envoyées à Antonella Braida, Céline Sabiron et Caroline Bertonèche (pour la SERA) ainsi qu’à Laurent Châtel et Charlotte Gould (pour des propositions SERA/ARTS) avant le 10 janvier 2017.

Texte de cadrage
The idea of re-construction(s) is at the core of British Romantic writing. William Wordsworth’s poetic project to salvage from the wreckage of terror ‘a more than Roman confidence, a faith / That fails not’ (The Prelude, Book II, 443), resulted into a monumental work (‘The Recluse’) which he himself described as a Gothic Cathedral.

The idea of ‘reconstruction’, erasure and rewriting – De Quincey’s palimpsest – is frequent in poetry and prose, from the Romantic poets’ interest in the paradigm of time in relation to Classical art and architecture (Keats’s Ode on a Grecian Urn, Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Shelley’s Ozymandias), to the rewriting of Classical myths (Prometheus Unbound, Hellas, Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion).

From imaginary to real buildings, British Romanticism also embodies the search for the Medieval ruin in the Neo-Gothic style, Walpole’s Strawberry Hill or Walter Scott’s Abbotsford House.
