OBJECTIF : savoir prononcer le nom des villes et pays concernés, décrire et reconnaître les drapeaux et décrire un document iconographique en plaçant des éléments dans une image Picture 1: Ice skating on Rideau Canal during Winterlude, North America’s greatest winter festival with spectacular ice carvings and snow sculptures, a gigantic snow playground. In the background, Fairmont Château Laurier, a luxury hotel built in the early 20th century. Picture 2: New York: The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA. It stretches 6,016 feet over East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn. It was built between 1869 and 1883. Picture 3: View of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s best known landmarks. It’s the world’s largest steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing 134 metres above the harbour. Nicknamed the “Coat hanger”, it was opened in March 1932. Exercise 1: Pronunciation “Please repeat after me” Exercise 2: “Please talk to me about the flags at the top of page 12” (use the toolbox) The flag on the left is the American flag, easily recognizable thanks to the 13 red and white stripes (representing the 13 original states) and to the 50 stars (one for each state) in the top-left hand corner. The flag in the middle is the Canadian flag with a red maple leaf on a white background in the middle and two red vertical bands on either side. The Australian flag consists of 3 main elements: The British flag= the Union Jack, indicating that Australia is a member of the Commonwealth (the 6 branches represent the 6 states in Australia: Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania) and the 7th branches represent the 2 territories: Northern territory and Australian capital territory) in the top-left corner. On the navy blue background a single white star (the Commonwealth star) can be seen below the British flag. Five smaller white stars represent the constellation of the Southern Cross, take up the top-right half of the flag. Exercise 3: Description des documents iconographiques Please tell me about the 3 photos! The picture in the top-left hand corner must correspond to the Canadian capital, Ottawa, since ice-skaters can be seen on a frozen canal. The spires and roofs in the background must be part of a historical building. The photo in the top-right hand corner must have been taken in New York. We can recognize the Manhattan skyline with its famous skyscrapers and in the foreground, the Brooklyn Bridge, spanning over East River and connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The picture at the bottom of the page must be a view of Sydney. On the other side of the bay, Sydney’s famous Opera House can easily be recognized by its characteristic architecture. The skyscrapers which can be seen in the distance indicate that Sydney must be a very modern city…. Méthodologie: Décrire une image pages 163-164
